Seneca Insurance is starting up a new line-of-business operation headquartered in Richmond, Virginia and focused on Property & Casualty Excess and Surplus Lines Insurance in the Contract Binding Area.

Job Title: Senior Underwriter

 

Duties and Responsibilities:


• Analyze, accept, or decline individual referrals from producers to ensure profitability and verify agents are operating in accordance with written guidelines within the contract manual.
• Assist in the development of agents and/or rehabilitation or termination of unprofitable producers.
• Review bound accounts to ensure proper compliance with underwriting guidelines.
• Participate in the development of new products and the refinement of existing ones.
• Review renewals and provide instructions to producers.
• Work as a liaison with IT to improve the technological functions of the contract underwriting platform.
• Participate in ordering and following up on premium audits.
• Coordinate necessary external agency audits.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree and/or seven to ten years related insurance experience within a contract/binding P&C environment.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to travel up to 25%
• Proficient in Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Job Title: Underwriting Manager


Duties and Responsibilities:


• Oversee agency management responsibilities for assigned territory including adding new agents or rehabilitating or terminating of existing brokers.
• Lead a team of underwriters and provide leadership to staff regarding underwriting referrals.
• Develop and implement profitable program opportunities for agent producers.
• Assist in the development and help the technological improvement of the underwriting platform that will be used by agents containing contract rules and rates.
• Analyze individual referrals from agents and manage an assigned book of business to ensure proper underwriting controls are in place including pricing strategies to ensure overall profitability.
• Represent the company at industry-related events and travel to visit appointed agents in an effort to market existing products.
• Participate in the recruitment and the selection process to ensure the division has the necessary talent to accomplish business goals.
• Participate in agency audits.
• Monitor products and producers for profitability and take any necessary action to ensure profitability going forward.
• Establish internal, efficient workflow standards.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree and seven to ten years related insurance experience within a contract/binding P&C environment.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to travel up to 25-40%.
• Proficient in Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Job Title: Executive Property Manager

General Qualifications:

• A highly motivated insurance professional “who can hit the ground running”.

• Individual must have excellent technical skills in all aspects of property underwriting including rating, primary and excess pricing on layered accounts.

• Insurance coverage interpretation both company and broker manuscript forms.

• Well versed in catastrophe modeling and skill set to effectively use the model as part of the rate process.

• Ability to triage and analyze new and renewal business that meets the company’s underwriting criteria and business model.

• Working knowledge of the direct and brokerage facultative markets.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Willing to travel 25% to 30% of the time. West Coast Territory
• Analyze, evaluate and regularly report upon quality of the portfolio
• Develop actionable recommendations for the portfolio’s improvement and/or sustainment
• Contribute profit building elements to the planning process
• Recommend and establish annual pricing objectives
• Oversee the achievement of pricing objectives, profit improvement plans and other loss ratio plan results drivers
• Evaluate and support the pursuit of opportunities for profitable growth
• Hold regional authority and operate as highest level of technical regional referral
• Evaluate individual underwriter competency & recommend delegable authority
• Participate in technical development plans for all underwriting associates
• Conduct and manage Underwriting Self-Audit Process 
• Identify or develop and institute Underwriting Best Practices
• Identify underwriter training needs and implement programs as required


Minimum Requirements:

• Fifteen to twenty years of property underwriting and management experience with at least five years of E&S property underwriting experience.
• Strong team building and coaching skills
• Strong analytical skills
• Understanding of Actuarial concepts
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft software applications
• Effective interpersonal and communications skills
• College degree or equivalent preferred

Job Title: Senior Underwriter Asst.

General Qualifications:

• Several years of experience in working within a start up environment.

• 10 to 15 years of property underwriting assistant experience/small commercial & middle market risks.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Responsible for accurate and timely rating transactions and policy issuance – both manual and system generated
• Process policies based on UW bypass criteria utilizing all information and resources
• Thorough understanding of the importance of service standards
• Accountable for supporting and implementing the processes of premium development, policy issuance, account maintenance and policy file maintenance under assigned authority
• Accountable for the attainment of service, productivity and quality control goals
• Accountable for risk selection, pricing, and file documentation within assigned authority
• Accountable for the profit, volume, and service results of assigned producers

Minimum Requirements:
• High school diploma required; some college or degree a plus
• Prior experience with mainframe policy issuance systems and Microsoft software preferred
• Several years of experience working with a catastrophe model data input and other vendor related underwriting tools such as Risk Meter, Marshall Swift ITV, Dun & Bradstreet reports, ISONET products
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work within other cross functional units within the company as well as internal and external customers
• Strong organization and written skills
• Supervisor experience a plus
• Self motivated. Willing to take on additional responsibilities
• Ability and experience to develop work flow processes
